What to do When Confronted With Road Rage

road rage

We’ve all seen it and been there to witness a nearby motorist speeding, stopping suddenly, or tailgating and making an unsafe situation for other drivers. Road rage happens when a motorist begins to drive aggressively and affects other motorists in an unsafe way. If you find yourself confronted with road rage, maybe it’s time to consider carrying a concealed weapon. Take a firearms training course and learn the skills you need to protect yourself in a difficult situation. You can also avoid road rage with these tips on what to do when confronted with road rage.

Warning Signs
Heavy traffic or perceived poor driving are just a few reasons for road rage to occur. Make sure to slow down and try to avoid a fellow motorist who is making threats, driving aggressively, holding a weapon, or approaching your vehicle. Try not to escalate the situation and avoid confrontation at all costs and pay attention to those warning signs to avoid getting into an unsafe situation.

Do Not Engage
If you find yourself confronted by an aggressive or angry driver, you should stop before any threats are made and do not engage with the driver. Be courteous to them and avoid making eye contact. Looking at them could be their goal so they can yell at you and it also can be seen as an act of mutual aggression. You may be tempted to say something back at them so keep your eyes on the road and obscene gestures to yourself.

Let Them Pass
If the driver is tailing your vehicle, cut you off, or threatening you verbally, slow down, change lanes, and let them pass you. The more distance between you and the aggressive driver, the safer you will be. You don’t have to stop, just make sure to get out of their way. If you choose to pull over and stop, keep your doors locked and windows closed in case the driver pulls over and confronts you.

Call 911
If the situation escalates to where you feel unsafe because of an aggressive driver, find a safe spot and call 911. When you speak to an operator, describe the other driver like what car they were driving, where they were spotted and direction they were headed, and if they displayed a weapon. Once you hang up with the operator, find a nearby location that you feel safe at.
