How Often Do You Need to Renew Your Concealed Carry Permit?

The Illinois State Concealed Carry permit is effective for a 5-year period for residents and non-residents. If you were one of the first people to obtain your Concealed Carry license from the State of Illinois, in the spring of 2014 when permits were first available, be sure to register for a renewal class now.

Your class certificate will not expire, so take the renewal class as early as you would like to avoid the rush.  According to the law, (430 ILCS 66/70), subsection C: A license is invalid upon expiration of the license, unless the licensee has submitted an application to renew the license, and the applicant is otherwise eligible to possess a license under this Act.* The renewal application takes 90-120 days to process, no different than your original application.

The class is three hours and consists of two hours of classroom time focused on changes/updates to laws and proper police interaction. The remaining hour is spent on the range.

Come to class prepared with these items:
  • Firearm & ammunition (for qualification)
  • Protection eyewear
  • Shooting earplugs
  • Pen or pencil, paper

Renewal fees are $150 for a 5-year period (plus $3 credit card fee). The renewal class itself is $50. There are no range fees. If you comparison shop for your class, be sure there are no hidden fees! Arrive early for class at: The Country Inn & Suites 1450 South Peace Road Sycamore, IL  60178.

Also note that there are 30 other states that will honor your IL permit: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Mississippi, Maine, Minnesota, New Hampshire, Ohio, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia, Wyoming.
Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont, and Wisconsin.

To possess a firearm or ammunition in the state of Illinois, Illinois gun laws require persons to be 21 years of age, a resident of the state of IL., and have a valid Firearm Owners Identification (FOID) card. After purchasing a handgun there is a 72-hour waiting period before being able to take possession of the gun.
