Cleaning and Maintenance of Your Firearm

While carrying and owning a firearm can certainly be rewarding, it is also a great responsibility. In order to use it carefully and appropriately, it is important to clean and care for it properly to ensure the safety of you and others around you.

Knowing the correct ways to maintain and clean your firearm is not the easiest task-- there are many steps to guarantee your firearm is in its best condition, and it can be hard to know where to start! We’ve compiled some of the best and most important tips to know when it comes to firearm cleaning and maintenance, so you know your firearm is always in tip-top shape:

  • Disassembly and Assembly. The assembly and disassembly of your firearm will depend on the type of firearm you own. Some can be taken apart in a few steps, while others will require more time and attention. Regardless, it is important to know how to disassemble and reassemble your firearm so you can access different parts of your firearm that may need more frequent or thorough cleaning.
  • Tools. You will need a few different types of tools to clean different parts of your firearm. We recommend having a bristled brush for the barrel, a cleaning rod long enough to push all the way through, and wipes to clean surfaces (these can be any material, from cloth to paper towel). Make sure your tools are long enough or short enough to accommodate the size of the firearm you are cleaning. We also recommend having a mat to clean on to keep surfaces clean. There are many various universal kits you can buy that will fit a variety of sizes of guns, so you don’t have to worry about buying individual tools for each of your firearms.
  • Cleaning Solutions. Proper cleaning solutions will remove any dirt in/on your firearms like rust or debris. Good cleaning solutions will remove dirt quickly, so you won’t have to spend too much time cleaning one part of your firearm. You should also invest in a good oil to lubricate and maintain the finish of your firearm.
  • Storage. Secure storage of your firearm is extremely important for the safety of your loved ones and the maintenance of your firearm. Keep it stored so it is not threatening to anyone in your house like children, and so it is not at risk of going off unexpectedly. You will also want to keep it in a dry place, to avoid any type of moisture from getting in your firearm. For both these reasons, consider investing in a humidity safe gun safe. This will also protect your firearm from getting stolen.
